With just 23 days to choose a film for the big day, we have now got to these releases which split the crowd. This ‘real life’ (yes it is based on actual events and as such these are more compelling than the actual film) story of a famed band, a spate of church burnings and two murders that left Norway in shock.
WHATS IT ABOUT?
A young guitarist called Euronymous (Rory Culkin) forms a black metal band called Mayhem. They are new, fresh and become the first black metal band in Norway. They have a new vocalist called Dead (Jack Kilmer), whose voice is despair encapsulated. Dead becomes suicidal, wanting deaths kiss to touch him. He dies and his death forces one band member to leave, he is replaced by new drummer Hellhammer (Anthony De La Torre) .When things become darker, things descend into a tit for tat war of burnt churches and deadly murder.
WHY SHOULD WE WATCH IT FOR HALLOWEEN?
LORD OF CHAOS reveals the descent of people, often stuck in a specific or isolated group, to outdo each other. Parallels can be felt with the rise of social media and the one upmanship of the danger narrative. From climbing buildings to falling off in a single misstep. What Jonas Åkerlund film does is point out the brutality that can lead from this. It is unpleasent and disturbing. Which both make for great cinema and unsettling horror cinema.
WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK OUT FOR?
The best thing on the disc is the Jonas Åkerlund interview. Here he outlines almost all of my points above. He also, briefly discusses the events that inspired it, defining why this single film, will stay with you and probably be enough of a Halloween picture for this year…
