Following on from our article on the five films nominated for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar we continue our series looking at the short and often forgotten films that were nominated for Academy Awards in 2010 . Today we take a look at the 5 films animated for Best Live Action Short Film.
The Door
This 17 minute film is the second Irish short film to pick up an Oscar nomination after Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty picked up one for short animation (watch it here). Directed by Juanita Wilson it has already won several awards at film festival across the world. Unfortunately its not available anywhere online and neither is a trailer (Please point us to a link if you can find one). The film is based on the true story of a father and his young daughter, set in Russia in 1986, and shows how they deal with the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. For those of you in London though it is being shown at the BFI on the opening night of the Birds Eye View Film Festival on 4 March.
Instead of Abracadabra
This Swedish film is 22 Minutes and comes from filmmaker Patrik Eklund. Its plot follows Tomas, who is a little bit too old to still be living with his parents, but his dream of becoming a magician leaves him with no other option. The film has already won the award for Best Swedish Short at Göteborg Film Festival. Again its not available online – It was uploaded to youtube but has since been removed but the trailer is below
Kavi
This is a 15 minute film about a young Indian boy Kavi, who tries to escape from the brick kiln where he’s forced to work. The filmmaker Gregg Helvey is trying to use this short to raise enough money to make into a feature length version. Miracle Fish
This short film comes from Australian Luke Doolan and after showing at last years Sundance has been shown and awarded at many film festivals. It follows 8 year old Joe on his birthday. When he is bullied at school he wishes on a miracle fish (remember those red plastic things you get?) that everybody in the world would disappear and awakens to find his wish has come true. The New Tenants
This Danish film is from debut director Joachim Back but was written by Anders Thomas Jensen who has worked on many famous films including the recent Hollywood remake Brothers and Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist. This dark and disturbing film follows two men moving in to an apartement with some funny and frightening inhabitants includingprying neighbours and a a glassy-eyed drug dealer. We cant find the whole film but the trailers below.
