THE DETECTIVE SOCIETY BOARD GAME REVIEW

We know that some of you dear readers, need a game that covers a broad age range for families. Others really want a solo experience to get them through an evening or over the course of a sleepy Xmas evening. Well will THE DETECTIVE SOCIETY  work? Lets find out.

THE DETECTIVE SOCIETY

Players 1-4 / Ages 8+ / Time 25 mins per chapter

THE GAME

Players are tasked with solving a mystery. They have to co operate here. Split into three separate chapters, they start with The missing Potion, a tale of a stolen invisibility potion. Open the pack and read the starter card. Players then scan a Q R Code and unlock the content that walks you seamlessly through a very amiable story. You are asked questions and you have to refer to the extra content in the box to solve the mystery. Simples. There are two more missions to solve, Time Travel Trouble and The Smashed Piñata. They both use similar processes to complete the game and be credited with the best detective!

THE REVIEW

I cant say that I didn’t enjoy THE DETECTIVE SOCIETY. I review as a side line, mysteries, so this is a comfortable fit. I decided to play test it singularly because, the requests we had from readers, focused mainly on the solo mode as an option. I can say that the experience is not unpleasant, nor unappetising. Its light and soft enough. Its not  serious in the sense of subject (there are no brutal murders), content (the performances are over blown intentionally and funny) or production values (they are effectively rendered if quite cheaply produced). This is not to say they are not compelling for a brief dive. The extra content builds in difficulty and each case is stand alone but adds layers to play. Overall its worth the fee but players will pass it on, after completion as replay ability is non existent.
