The Untamed DVD

Themes of personal corruption, obsession, degradation, gratification, self destruction and moral hypocrisy filter through this Mexican horror film from acclaimed director Amat Escalante. However it seems that it all boils down to that act which crosses species and races. Sex and sexuality of course. Sex can be a destructive thing. It can be simultaneously beautiful and abominable. The Untamed explores the power of the act, the power of dynamics within gender and society itself.

When Veronica arrives at a hospital after being left with a chest wound from an encounter with a strange creature, Fabian is confused. Veronica seems nice but wants to become friends. So he introduces her to his sister Alejandra and brother in law Angel. Fabian is having an affair with Angel but wants something more. Alejandra also wants more from her love life, so when Veronica offers both something they will never forget, they jump at the chance.

The Untamed is a bold film but one that has drawn some very complex reviews. Yes the film is about social commentary but I felt its primary goal was this. It asks the viewer to examine not only what is being shown on screen but also their feelings in regard to primal urges. It does this without remorse and without a filter which could lessen the impact of the depictions.

It sexually challenging but this serves to underscore the idea that we are all animal underneath and that it is lurking, suppressed like truths under the skin. These truths surface only when prompted by crisis or by will. They aren’t always negative but can be destructive because they can draw out deeply hidden and unpleasant realities hidden in a room in our souls. Its dark stuff at times but all the more rewarding for it.

The DVD had little extras of note but the film is worth a visit.
