THE RIGHTEOUS BLU RAY REVIEW

Described by the film director as ‘Haunting’ in his very passionate examination in his commentary, this is pitch perfectly to the power of THE RIGHTEOUS. It haunts the viewer, with a vibrant story about a former Catholic priest, Frederic Mason (Henry Czerny), whose broken by the tragic death of his young daughter. He has secrets though and when a mysterious young man (Mark O’Brien) appears wounded and in need of assistance, he questions his role in the world. His wife Ethel (Mimi Kuzyk) is more welcoming and her and Frederic relationship fragments. Sensing he might earn more redemption from the troubled man and his wandering spiritual journey… Tinge with questions of faith and sprinkled with occult horror Mark O’Brien  directorial debut is essential viewing for a bunch of reasons.

The stories of it being reminiscent of Bergman, is particualar true. Taking the bleak landscapes of Canada’s Newfoundland and the crisply captured monochrome of cinematographer Scott McClellan aside, THE RIGHTEOUS offers a Bergmanesqe examination of the deep trauma that the loss of faith and the pain of the Catholic Church delivered. Seeped in the power of what that trauma can manifest, THE RIGHTEOUS excels. However in the hands of some, it would have been trite but thanks to a well crafted script, taut but still compassionate direction, and very strong performances from Czamy in particular, it delivers in droves.

The Extras on the disc are of the highest quality indeed. Infact some of the best that Arrow have delivered to us. Though mainly people talking incesssently, they deliver a varied and vocal examination of the films construction, production and the end, which is as powerful as the great master Bergman but tinged with THE EXORCIST in its sheer power to leave you thinking past the credits.
