The Sinbad Trilogy Blu Ray review

S4The adventures of the explorer, pirate, free spirit Sinbad. He battles cyclops and dinosaurs when on the search for treasure in THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (Nathan Juran, 1958) Takes on Shiva to defeat an evil wizard in THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (Gordon Hessler, 1973)  and if that isn’t enough he finishes off the trilogy by taking on lions and another cyclops to stop an evil witch in SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (Sam Wanamaker, 1977). All told he sees the world and slays his way to fame and fortune.

S2Sinbad has been loved for it stop motion animation. As a kid I remember seeing all three over the course of a month on TV. They were silly, fun, energetic things that you watched to see what wonderful creature he would have to fight and how. Ray Harryhausen was the master of this and his work exemplified both creativity and imagination like only pioneers of cinema (George Melies is another) could do. They took the form and made it playful and fun.

S1For me the best film of the series is SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (Sam Wanamaker, 1977). It is as good as CLASH OF THE TITANS and JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS. SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (Sam Wanamaker, 1977) has everything in it. Fun, adventure, visual spectacle, characters with dimensions, action scenes that are great fun and feels more than is just there on the surface. A rare thing in an action adventure film…. but this is no ordinary film…

S3So to the extras..listed below and if you have a copy coming to you, lucky, lucky you. Great 4k restoration of THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD. Looks delightful and balances the colour and light remarkably. SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER and THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD 2k looks good enough to eat. The films were always a little dicey on the colour correction but here they sing. They look good and it makes a world of difference.

S5Commentaries is great by my favourite extra is the interviews. Tom Baker is the best. What a fun guy and a great actor. The booklet that comes with the release is also very, very good. It contains enough to delight long after the films have finished.
