KARLOFF AT COLUMBIA (LIMITED EDITION) BLU RAY REVIEW

Boris Karloff. Or Karloff to many. A titan of cinema. A name that many a film lover or film watcher knowns only to well. I knew of him as the actor who grew up down the road from where I lived. But for most, FRANKENSTEIN is the most obvious go to. His iconic image, glares out to us from its poster. Then THE MUMMY of course pops up. Seemingly though, his less familiar works (to the many and not the few) are those which, though shunned of the spot light, reveal an actor with range and mastery of performance.

6 films are in the collection. From THE BLACK ROOM, a tale of twin brothers and a rift between cruel and kind. One of the twins inherits the family castle and suddenly the local women start disappearing. THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG, begins a ‘cycle’ of films that all appear here. Dubbed the “Mad Doctor” cycle, all see Karloff playing, well a doctor whose obsessions inevitably lead them to evil deeds! THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU, is a change of pace, starring both Karloff and Peter Lorre. It parodies the mad doctor delightfully.

Most will know of these films. What they will want is my view on the set.

DISC

All six films are 1080p. This is to say, they look good as the prints they are sourced from have been very well treated. So no light leak or haze. Field is deep and blacks are solid. Only on BEFORE I HANG, did I notice a slight grain issue but its so minor as to be worthless mentioning. The best treated film funnily enough is BEFORE I HANG. Looks lush and matches some of the great cinematography of the period.

EXTRAS

The new commentaries of Kevin Lyons and Jonathan Rigby are excellent but the best by a mile is THE BLACK ROOM. Why? Well textures, talking points about Karloff and the future projects. To expect anything less from Rigby would be ridiculous indeed. He is a master of the form indeed and worth the price of admission alone.
