If you, like me, where around at the start of Tarantino’s rise to fame, then Ringo Lam is directly associated with RESERVOIR DOGS. Ten years after CITY ON FIRE, (one of many inspirations for QT) came FULL ALERT. Considered a ‘late’ highlight, it sees Inspector Pao (Lau Ching-wan), chasing bank robber and escaped con Mak Kwan (Francis Ng). One has the weight of their own expectation on their shoulders. The other has a decidedly hostile desire to steal a cool billion from a race track at all costs. Kwan explosive skills are the centre to his plan and the cops are onto him. Pao must every trick in the book, in order to get his man. However Kwan will do whatever he can to stop him. But can they prevent heavy civilian casualties, police fatalities and crime lord interference.

Eureka have navigated a clear line between great cinema and lower profile films. This has lead to good films like FULL ALERT and TAKE DOWN surfacing, alongside the brilliant MAD DETECTIVE. The release has a lot going for it, in terms of the HD transfer that retains the 90s grit but establishes the right tonal decay. But the extras are a bit of a let down in terms of the actual disc contents. Yes, you get the commentaries (Djeng is the better as it is more revealling and less caged) but they are not as varied, informative or extrapolatory as many would like. The booklet is the best thing here and that is a stretch sadly.
