Castle Freak Blu Ray review

CF2After inheriting a large and splendid mansion in Italy, John Reilly sets about not only selling the place and quickly but fixing his shattered marriage. Both might seem at least on the surface possible. The place is old but a stand out goldmine for the right wine loving, culture exploring middle class type. Then the marriage might be fixable, his wife still loves him and their daughter is now able to speak to him again after the car crash that blinded his daughter and killed their only son. Three weeks or so it should take and in that time they will stay at the castle and he will live without wine. However the castle might be the undoing of everything, with its family secrets….

CF1This part might well be called the love letter to the great Stuart Gordon. This for me is his most under rated and miss understood masterpiece. Its a complex film like his previous FROM BEYOND but has the joyful black comedy of RE ANIMATOR. The film is an opposites in culture type allogory. A film about how our transatlantic cousins know so little of European custom, yet almost moronically covert it. How the things left behind after the pilgrims, war et al in Europe are still waiting to bite back. Gordon is the master of the macabre, gore filled exploration of the human and its body and this film is almost his magnum opus.He gets the gore but keeps it clever and not excessive like RE ANIMATOR. This aids the serious tone but his focus on the cast aids his black comedy heart.

CF4It has a crazed central performance from the sublime Jeff Combs and a hysterical turn from Barbara Crampton, both doing their level best to make you laugh and lurch back in your seat. The daughter and monster are sides to these twos great to and fro antics. Visual compositions are amazing and as seen in FROM BEYOND, Gordon and his DOPs get the key to camera technique as cinematic aid to the audience in horror but subvert it enough to make it comedic and sardonic. Music and audio is excellent and the score composed by Ricahrd Band (Nice name) is another walk through of A movie excellence, hidden in B movie heaven.

CF3Now this part is the love letter to 88 films and Callum Waddell. I have had the pleasure of seeing these guys work and these guys always provide great quality and value. Today they have outdone themselves. The HD print is amazing, Mix on sound awesome in the 5.1 version. Castle speak is informed and Gordon is amazing. The making of is great. Then I found the short THE EVIL CLERGYMAN. Watch this first. Literally you will thank me. Now to Mr Waddells booklet. A great interview of both Band and Gordon, alongside very rich detail and content. BUY IT!!!
