If you’re a follower of Edgar Wright on twitter, a comic book fan or just a plain old nerd like me, you’ll be well aware that the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is perhaps one of the most anticipated film events of the year. Why you ask? Well probably the combination of the amazing Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) directing, the super-awesome source material from Bryan Lee O’Malley, and a hella cool cast that includes Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh and Jason Schwartzman (to name just a few).
So what do we think of the trailer (which can be viewed here)? Well, at the risk of repeating myself, it’s all kinds of awesome. The first thing to grab your attention are Wright’s mind-blowing comic-style approach to the action scenes, there’s ‘WHUDs’ ‘SMAKs’ and ‘KPOWs’ littering the screen, taking graphic inspiration from the graphic novels. The breakneck speed of the trailer means that repeat viewings are required to soak it all in, you can’t help but feel that may be the case for the movie as well. Cera seems at his geeky best as Pilgrim whilst Winstead looks gorgeous as Ramona; hell if I were Scott Pilgrim I’d fight seven evil exes for her…so it’s fair to say the casting appears to be spot on. And then there’s Chris Evans – soon to be Captain America – whose appearance in the trailer screams scene-stealer.
Everything about the trailer’s got me excited for the film which is scheduled for release on August 13th. But let us know what you think, if you’re a fan of the graphic novels (which the film won’t be sticking to too closely) are you pleased with what Wright’s done? What’s your opinion on the casting? Has Wright taken the right approach to Pilgrim? Anyone not impressed? Let us know in the comments section below.
