Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro are to star alongside each other in the rom-com An Ex To Grind. 20th Century Fox is to produce the film, based on the novel of the same name, written by Jane Heller.
The book concerns a struggling waitress (no doubt to be played by Diaz) who is supported by her sports star husband (yep, Del Toro). A few years down the line and things go a bit funhouse mirror on us, with Del Toro all washed up and Diaz thriving as a successful businesswoman. Diaz then wants to ditch her husband, who’s become a lazy slob, but realises she’ll quite literally being paying for it the rest of her life.
To lighten the load she tries to find the layabout a new wife to straighten him up, but (shock horror!) Diaz soon ends up wanting him back. It’s all as predictable as chick lit and chick flicks get, but perhaps the left-field casting of Del Toro, who’s hardly known as a romantic leading man, may offer something new to this tired genre.
