Jumanji : Welcome to the Jungle DVD

Jumanji…the board game which captured the imagination of a generation. Now we have Jumanji : Welcome to the Jungle. Four school kids are sent to detention after a series of incidents. While sifting through paper they come across an old games cartridge. When they load the game, it ends up drawing them in. They spawn as game characters,  Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon (Jack Black), Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart ) and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) and are given a quest.

It is this generations take on a popular film from the previous generation. No board game now, a video game replaces this apparently staid device.  No single personality comedian and versatile actor, instead we have four calibre actors, instead of small town we have a jungle. The script is filled with zing and zap. Laughs tumble around and often are well executed. We have troupes and devices to move the plot along but though many of these are signposted, you can still enjoy the process. Its best when it hits its stride at the start. Swiping at video game achetypes, plotting and even cut videos. The little notes about lives, attributes and special skills allows the narrative to have inflections and broadly covering an audiences expectation. It falls flat as it moves into its third act however. Running out of speed after such as fierce start. It gains too much weight. This means by the end it feels tired. However it is worth the journey for the many…
